PETITION AGAINST WAL-MART SUPERSTORE IN BEND

To: Members of the Bend City Council

We, the undersigned believe that the plans by Wal-Mart to build a superstore in the City of Bend represent a major threat to the health and well-being of our city's economy, workers and community.

Wal-Mart has a long history of destroying developing communities, displacing small businesses and destroying downtowns all across America. Wal-Mart is a threat to Bend because of its history of illegal and dangerous treatment of employees, poor pay scale, inadequate health benefits (resulting in employee health costs billed to the community and state), its record of sexual discrimination and numerous violations of basic worker rights. Please don't be lured by its charity donations (only a fraction of those by other major corporations) or by offers to pay for infrastructure improvements or remediation. Other cities report on losses of jobs that are not made up in number by those "created" by Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is not only a bad employer. Its superstore in Bend will result in a net job loss for Bend.

We urge the City Council to find a way to halt the development of the Wal-Mart supercenter in Bend.
