Consumer Reports says Wal-Mart grocery prices aren't "always low"
Supporters of Wal-Mart are always quick to claim that a supercenter in Bend will bring low-priced food to working class residents.
But, the October issue of Consumer Reports—an independent, nonpartisan magazine—reports that several Oregon grocery stores offer comparable prices, fresher meat and produce, better service and cleaner stores than Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart scored just 69 out of a possible 100 points in the Consumer Reports grocery ratings, coming in 45th out of 54.
Trader Joe’s scored 87, tying it with a NE chain called Wegman’s, for the top overall rating. And Trader Joe’s scored as well as Wal-Mart when it came to pricing.
Costco came in seventh overall and also equaled Wal-Mart in pricing. Winco ranked 11th overall, and also equaled Wal-Mart’s pricing.
Wal-Mart comes in 24th in Bulletin's on-line retail survey
The Bulletin's online retail survey of readers (January 2007) showed little support for a Wal-Mart supercenter. Of the 1,234 votes cast in the survey, only about 50 voters said they wanted a supercenter to come to Bend. That ranked Wal-Mart behind 23 other businesses that readers said they would like to see come to Bend.
